UK CBAM 2027: Are You Ready for What Comes Next? 

UK CBAM comes into effect on 1 January 2027, and for businesses importing steel and aluminium, the countdown is now very real.

Over recent months, the requirements have continued to evolve as HMRC has provided greater clarity around how the new regime will operate. For metals businesses, those changes matter. CBAM will introduce new data, reporting and cost requirements, and getting the detail right is more important than rushing to implement a solution against requirements that are still developing.

At Jonas Metals Software, we have therefore taken a considered approach. Working with Auditel and drawing on input from our customers, we have been following the developing requirements closely so that our software response reflects the practical realities faced by metals stockholders, service centres and distributors.

Those practical questions can quickly become complex. What information needs to be captured when material is imported? How should embedded emissions information follow material through stock? What happens when material is cut, slit, drilled, bent or otherwise processed? Does the energy used during those operations need to be considered? And what information will businesses ultimately need to retain and report?

These aren't simply software questions — they're business questions that metals companies need to understand as they prepare for January.
